Viscosifiers
Viscosifiers are used to improve hole cleaning and solid suspension capabilities of Drilling Fluids.
Bentonite is a clay which is composed of three layered clays such as montmorillonite, and is widely used as a mud additive for viscosity and filtration control. Commercial Bentonite ores vary widely in amount and quantity of swelling clays.
Guar Gum is a naturally occurring high viscosity polymer used in both salt water and fresh water muds. It is derived from the seed of the guar plant and is a polysaccharide polymer. It provides viscosity and is useful for offshore drilling as it can be directly added to the sea water.
XC Polymer is a high molecular weight Xanthum Gum biopolymer and is used to increase the viscosity of water based drilling and completion fluids. Xanthan Gum is an anionic polymer with tolerance for salinity and fair tolerance for hardness ions. It is a finely powdered material that can vary in the amount of residual bacteria debris and the ease with which it disperses into water. It is stable up to 150ºC. It is primarily a viscosity modifier for freshwater and salt Saturated Muds.
