Shale Stabilizers / Inhibitors

Additive that control reactive shales while drilling with water base drilling fluids.

INSH 7000 ™ is a finely graded fibrous material which helps in avoiding fluid invasion, increasing well bore strengthening and avoiding pore pressure transmission. The low permeability seal created by the product limits transmission of destabilizing wellbore pressure into the formation. This barrier or ‘shield’ minimizes formation damage and prevents fractures from propagating. It is a fine graded naturally occurring cellulosic material which has been further modified by grafting so as to make it non invasive. When added at a dose of up to 2% on the drilling fluid it can seal heterogeneous permeable formations.

KCl, a soluble salt, is an extremely efficient shale stabiliser when drilling hydro sensitive clays and shales. Inhibition is provided through ion exchange; the potassium ion enters between the individual clay platelets in the shale so that they are held together, thus eliminating entry of water from the drilling fluid.

Sulphonated Asphalt is modified sodium sulphonated asphaltic compound. Its versatile mud conditioner contributes to the stability of drilling fluids, stabilizes shale, inhibits dispersion of drilled solids, reduces torque and drag, and acts as an alternative to oil usage.

PHPA – a shale inhibitor and rheology modifier – is a high molecular weight anionic polyacrylamide, designed primarily to provide shale stability and viscosity in water-based drilling fluids. Dry PHPA powder disperses rapidly without balling or fish eyes. The product maintains borehole stability by preventing shale swelling and erosion. High temperature PHPA is stable up to 140°C.

Polyamine is used in polymer based fluids. It can be added directly to the mud system with no effect on viscosity or filtration properties. It effectively inhibits shale or clays from hydrating and minimizes the potential for bit balling.

Clouding Glycol is a Polyalkene type, water miscible multifunctional additive for drilling fluids. Effective in medium to high salinity systems, It is used in water based drilling fluid to improve lubricity and shale stability and to extend the temperature stability. The chemical can be used in most water based mud systems, and non dispersed KCL/PHPA systems.
